Course Description

This course provides an introduction to medical assisting (healthcare team, professionalism, communication, law, ethics), ambulatory care administration (written communication, telephone skills, scheduling, health records), coding and billing procedures (diagnostic coding, procedural coding, health insurance, billing and reimbursement), medical office administrative functions (patient accounts, collections, banking services), assisting with medical specialities (all-hazard preparedness, medical emergencies), and career development.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe a typical healthcare team including roles and communication.
  2. List and explain front-office procedures including telephone interactions, scheduling, and daily operations.
  3. Distinguish between diagnostic and procedural coding.
  4. Describe procedures related to patient accounts and collections.
